Bathysphere, detail
In 1932, Otis Barton and William Beebe descended 3,028 feet into the ocean, more than tripling the record for the deepest dive up to that point. They went down in a bathysphere of Barton's own devising, a cramped little metal globe with just enough space for two men. The bathysphere had a very thick plate glass window and no exterior lighting, making everything they saw that much more mysterious.
